Bios

SHORT BIO #1 - w/ focus on fiction

Kendra Broekhuis writes stories on life’s heavy stuff with a dose of humor and a lot of love. She is the author of the novels Nearly Beloved and Between You and Us, as well as the nonfiction book Here Goes Nothing: An Introvert’s Reckless Attempt to Love Her Neighbor. For her day job, she stays home with her four kids and drives them from one place to another in her minivan. She and her family live in Milwaukee.

LONG BIO

After graduating from Dordt University with a degree in elementary education in 2011, Kendra worked for three years at Inter-American School in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, teaching first grade and assisting the accreditation process. When her first child was born in 2013, she left teaching to stay home, and began writing online about a variety of topics, including motherhood, neighboring, and grief.

Kendra’s first nonfiction book called, Here Goes Nothing: An Introvert’s Reckless Attempt to Love Her Neighbor was published by Thomas Nelson in 2017. That same year, she was the recipient of Dordt University’s Horizon Award, recognizing alumni who are community-minded and entrepreneurial. Kendra has spoken at various churches, MOPS groups, schools, and youth groups, and has been the keynote speaker at multiple events, including two of Bible League International’s regional gatherings in 2018, and the Unseen Conference in 2021.

After writing, speaking, and creating non-fiction content for over a decade, she’s now publishing two novels with WaterBrook. The first, Between You and Us, debuted in 2024. As described by the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association, Kendra’s stories “touch on heavy topics with a dose of humor and a lot of love.”

Kendra now lives in the city of Milwaukee with her family, where her day job is to stay home with four of her children and drive them from one place to another in her minivan. You can find most of her sarcastic ramblings and serious encouragement—including the grief of losing a baby at 33 weeks pregnant—in her newsletter and on social media.

PITCH:

When a grieving woman unexpectedly steps into a different outcome of her life, she must choose between the husband she loves and the daughter she lost.

SYNOPSIS:

Two possible lives to live. One impossible choice to make.

When Leona Warlon heads across the city to meet her husband, David, for a rare dinner out, she hopes they can share a moment of relief after their year of loss. But Leona quickly realizes this is no ordinary date night. She hasn’t just stepped into an upscale restaurant; she’s stepped into a different version of her life. One in which her marriage is no longer tender, in which her days are pressured by her powerful in-laws, and in which her precious baby girl lived.

Now Leona must weigh the bitter and sweet of both trajectories, facing an unimaginable choice: Stay in a world where tragedy hasn’t struck but where the meaningful life she built with David is gone? Or return to a reality that’s filled with struggle and sorrow but also deep and enduring love?
